COFFEE UPDATE 7

Oh, its been way too long since I’ve written anything on the blog! Its good to be back.

So, welcome to a seventh edition of the Coffee Update. I felt it was a good time to do this since I’ve been off the blog for a long time now, and I thought I should say why, along with a few other things that have gone down in recent times in my life.

Settle down, grab a cuppa and join me at this Coffee Update.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you how Manchester United won the Emirates FA Cup. Hell yes! Probably a few of you aren’t into football (soccer), but for me, as a Man Utd supporter, it was a hell of a moment. Amazing game, amazing players, amazing match-winning goal, amazing atmosphere. Amazing day. I totally freaked out when they blew the final whistle at the end of the game, because there were honestly a lot of minutes in the game when I thought we were going to lose. But we didn’t.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that my 12th Grade Board Exam results were declared a few days ago, and I secured 81.2%, which in all honesty is underwhelming for me. I did secure about 89% in the 10th Grade Board Exams, under a much tougher curriculum. You could say I had more time and outside help then, but its still not an excuse. I should have done better. Thankfully it isn’t going to have much of an impact on my immediate future academics, because I am guaranteed admission to senior college, at the same college I was for the last 2 years. It was a great thing that I did get 89% two years back, because only then did I manage to get into this college, which is according to me, in terms of academics, probably one of the top 3-5 colleges in the city. Now, I intend to major in psychology at the end of my 3-year course that will begin in a month, give or take, and a lot of people have told me that the psychology teaching faculty at the college is arguably the best in the city, so I am indeed very grateful.

Finally, if we were having coffee right now, I’d say I need to tell you why I have been away from the blog for a while now, and why that may happen again. No, I did not take another holiday. I am actually working on a sort of similar project as this blog, with a couple of friends. This project is actually much more elaborate than this blog. Two of my friends, Aditya Deshingkar and Rohan Marathe, and myself, are going to, in the near future [which is probably (hopefully) the next one month], create a YouTube channel, and a connected podcast channel on SoundCloud. We are currently setting the groundwork for both, which includes creating a set-up for the videos, making test footage, creating artwork for the channels and whatnot. Its a lot more work than I probably ever have put into a project, but its fun because its a project that I really want to put my hundred and three percent effort into. Since it involves putting in a lot of time and effort, it becomes difficult for me to set apart time for the blog as well, since I also have that two year long Yoga course that I talked about, and that takes roughly 4.5 hours of mine every Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and the gym takes about 1.5 hours about 5 days a week. I am assuming that once the channel and everything is up and running, and the basics templates and frameworks are in place, it would probably reduce some of our work.

So for those of you that would like to know, our YouTube channel is going to revolve around comic books and movies and TV shows based on comic books. This mainly means Marvel Comics and DC Comics, which includes iconic characters like Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Daredevil, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and many more. What we are going to do, is talk about one randomly selected character in each episode on the YouTube channel, and give the viewers some of the basic info about the characters in their on-screen version (which means, as they were portrayed in TV shows and movies). We will, of course refer to the comic book versions of the characters as well, as and when required. Each video will more or less be for five minutes.

The podcast is going to be a little different. For one, its going to be much longer; you can expect it to be anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes long. On the podcast, we shall be sticking more to the comic book version of the character we picked in the YouTube video, so this will give you a more deeper insight into the character as he or she originally was and is in the comics.

So if any of you are interested in stuff like this, then stay tuned I will sneak some info about this out to you once we have something up or anything of that sort.

Aaaaand that’s all I got for this Coffee Update, I hope it wasn’t too long that your coffee went cold.

Until next time.

JV out.

Coffee Update #6

COFFEE UPDATE5

Hey-ho, welcome to another coffee update! For those of you new to this, it’s the place on my blog where I periodically update you guys with what’s up in my life. I’ve got a lot to tell you this time, so let’s get right into it.

Grab a cuppa and settle in.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I got back from my holiday away from the city a few days back. We’d gone to Lonavala, which is about two and a half hours away from Mumbai. We stayed in a really wooded area, with bungalows sprinkled over the place. It was peaceful as hell. The food was really good as well. It was just generally a really, really refreshing experience. I needed that. Pune is another really old and historic Maratha city that’s about another two hours from Lonavala so while we were at Lonavala, we decided to check out Pune as well. So we went and did that for a day. I’ve been to Pune a couple of times but haven’t really seen it, extensively. We checked out temples and museums and a zoo. The zoo was particularly noteworthy because there were times in there, when I was really genuinely scared. I mean, they had truck-sized tigers and even bigger white tigers in these enclosures that had no sort of wires on them. Just good ol’ cement walls surrounding it all. I later noticed they’d dug deep trenches in the inside of the enclosures, between the wall and the animals’ ‘territories’ which were apparently supposed to be enough to deter them from trying to jump over, but I’m still not convinced. Either way it was the first time I saw tigers so close up. Just one word: majestic. Oh, and I got stung by a huge-ass honeybee, so that’s one thing struck off the bucket list I never wanted to have.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I have recently enrolled in a two year-long teachers’ training course at The Yoga Institute at Santacruz, here in Mumbai. It is a comprehensive course that teaches the student all about Yoga and its way of life, including the asanas and Pranayamas which are the physical aspect of Yoga, but also the teachings of Yoga, its philosophy and its views on Psychology, et cetera. Since I want to pursue Psychology as a profession, I feel doing this course would grant me a great deal of knowledge about the Indian view on the human mind, and would be a helpful to my career in general. At the end of the two years, I will be bestowed with a certificate saying I am a certified Yoga teacher, and will be regarded valid all over the world. I will have completed this course a year before I complete my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. On the physical exercise front, I have also renewed my membership at the gym (it expired in January), and I just started going yesterday. Three months out of the gym and I feel the soreness again. Isn’t as bad as when I started going to the gym for the first time in my life, about a year ago but it’s there nonetheless.

theshawshankredemption

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I have a confession to make. The confession is, that I haven’t seen The Shawshank Redemption. Yet. It needed to be said. It’s the highest rated movie on IMDB for a reason, I guess. I’ll find out what that is, exactly, soon.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d want to ask you a couple of things.

  1. Firstly, I feel the blog is in need of a change of theme. Would you agree? Its not that I’m getting tired of having the same theme for quite some time now (because that happens), but that I feel there’s certain drawbacks of this theme. For example, there’s the matter of the sidebar. This theme doesn’t have an open sidebar, you have to click in the top-left corner for it to reveal itself. Whenever I try to picture myself as a reader of the blog, I always feel I wouldn’t always want to pull out the sidebar and scroll all the way down to it, because it is quite long. I may be wrong, which is why I need you, the readers, to let me know if the sidebar can sometimes get tedious. Themes with open sidebars are good that way, while you’re scrolling down the blog, the sidebar scrolls down along with you, so its in your vision, and you can always check out something that gets your attention. At the same time, though, one may feel the sidebar gets in the way of the subject matter, the post, that really matters. It takes away the minimal look a blog may have. I like minimal. Its why I went for this theme in the first place. I don’t know, I’m in two minds about this. You guys let me know what you think, though. It will surely clarify things for me.
  2. And, second, I recently tried my hand at a really different kind of post. Its been said many times that I am REALLY into movies and TV shows and stuff. I watch a lot of those. So this new kind of post, which I’m calling Rewind Reel, is based on movies. The premise is that I pick a random movie and I flip it on its head. That is, I reimagine it as it would have been if one is to watch it backwards, from the end to the beginning. Of course, 99.99% movies aren’t supposed to be watched like that so I use some creativity and humour I have been endowed with, to make sense out of reverse movies, and basically, entertain. Now, I haven’t really got a great response on that post. It could be because the movie I chose to inaugurate this new feature was a movie that I don’t think many have seen. I myself didn’t hear of it much after it had been released. Either way, please check it out whenever you guys can and lemme know what you think of it. I’d like to do more of that, and I probably will even if not many like it, but it’d sure feel better if people do like it.

Finally, if we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that that’s all I’ve got for this coffee update and that I hoped you had fun chilling out with a virtual cup of coffee. Before, going, I’d ask you how you are doing. I’d ask you what’s going on in your life and how it’s working out. I’d also invite you for another coffee update, sometime soon.

See you guys on the other side.

Coffee Update #3

COFFEE UPDATE 3

Fancy a coffee? Cyber-coffee, shall we call this?

Welcome back to a third coffee update. Let me bring you up to speed with stuff, while you sip on that beautiful little cup of coffee.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I’ve designed a couple of new covers for this post format on my blog (the ones at the beginning of this post). Pretty snazzy, eh?

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I’ve put my music library on shuffle at the moment, and Adele’s Rolling in the Deep is on right now. Her voice can either really get on your nerves, or it feels very, very satisfying.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that Suits is officially THE best TV show on this planet or any other developed enough to rank TV shows. It resumed its 5th season on the 27th of January after a winter break, long enough to make me impatient as hell. Literally every episode of it is perfect. Do yourself a favour and go watch it.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you I just got back my results for the preliminary examinations that took place in the second and third weeks of January. I said I was confident of doing well, and I did. Since the prelims are like a rehearsal for the real thing (the Boards, where you do not actually write on boards), the teachers are often very strict while dishing out marks and frequently give us less than what our answer objectively warrants, so that us students don’t get complacent before the Boards. I did encounter this in a couple of subjects, but not all. No big deal though, I know what the reality of the situation is though.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that Billy Boyd is a hell of a guy. Just listen to this:

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I finally saw Spectre. I see what people meant when they said Christoph Waltz was under-utilised. I feel he was terribly under-used. He was such a badass in Django Unchained and now this is the role he gets in a James Bond movie that should have been defining for him as that character who is kinda blurred morally, as he was in Django. Overall decent Bond flick, but it always feels with Dan Craig’s Bond, that the real villain is always Bond himself, with his personality coming in the way all the time.

Well, that’s it for this coffee convo (or tea if you’re not into coffee)! I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about me.

What would you tell me if we were having coffee right now?

Coffee Update

Today’s Writing 101 assignment is to update my readers (that’s you) over a virtual cup of coffee (replace ‘coffee‘ with ‘tea‘ if that’s what you prefer) so as to let them know what the goings-on in my life are. I think its a good way to create that personal connect with your readers, one that not many other writing forms can create successfully, and, since I like to be casual in my writing, I feel quite up for this.

if we were having coffee right now...

If we were having coffee right now, I would tell you that I got drenched in the rain last evening. My 9 year-old sister and I had gone out to rent a movie from the store nearby. The rains have been on the down low these past many days so we weren’t expecting anything beyond the light drizzle but what we got was a full-blown thunderstorm complete with bellowing winds, raging thunder and streaky lightning.

If we were having coffee right now, I would tell you that I have been going to the gym for about four months now (I think I spoke about this in one of my earlier posts as well) to gain some mass. I am genetically slim, my dad was that way too when he was young, and I gain weight very slow, no matter how much I eat. Its weird, but it has its upside: you have no restrictions on eating, whatsoever. I have also been taking protein shakes that, just BTW, taste like you mixed the world’s darkest chocolate with with the world’s most bitter medicine and added the smell of burning rubber to it. Absolutely awful. I don’t know how I’m going to finish the whole 5kg pack.

If we were having coffee right now, I would tell you that I have been taking another writing course on Blogging U (for all those of you that don’t know already). Its Writing 101 again, but with a revamped look and new set of assignments, and might I say, I’m having a blast at it.

If we were having coffee right now, I would tell you that I have been thinking about writing for some sort of website or magazine where I would actually get paid. I’m having a bit of a break from college since we’re through with almost everything in most of our subjects, there have been a lot of holidays what with the Ganpati festival and whatnot, and our terminal exams are nearing. So I have a lot of time on my hands right now, and my mom has been telling me to invest it in something beyond the blog, occasional studies, movies and TV shows. Something that makes me grow as a personal, and if it gives me some monetary benefit then that’s an added bonus. I would love to know if any of you guys know about any such websites/other media where I can contribute by writing.

If we were having coffee right now, I would tell you that Manchester United play Southampton tonight and I’m looking forward to watching the match. Anybody else out here who’s going to watch it as well?

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I am pretty active on Quora as well. Those of you who haven’t checked out that little place of wisdom, must do so immediately. Its basically a Q&A platform where anybody can ask and answer questions about absolutely everything. I was introduced to it by a friend and initially I used to answer questions related to topics like life problems, everyday psychology, English grammar and football. I guess my football answers were really liked by people and I started getting asked to answer football-related questions only, so now I am a most viewed writer in multiple football categories. I guess we had an assignment in Blogging 101 once to create identities on different parts of the internet along with our blogs, and I have something of an identity on Quora now, which you can check out by clicking here.

What would you tell me if we were having coffee right now?
