Coffee Update #5

COFFEE UPDATE5

Welcome back to another one of my Coffee Updates! This is where I brief you with what’s up in my life, what I’m thinking, and what I’ve been up to recently.

So grab a cuppa and settle in.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I am finally done with my 12th Grade Finals, or the Board Exams, as they are called here. They went on for around a month but I wrote my last exam a couple of days back. To be honest, they went very, very well. I feel I did well. I had English, Hindi, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology and Logic as my subjects for the last two years (Philosophy came in, in the second year; I had Math for the first year) out of which I think I found Economics and Hindi to be the toughest overall. Economics because there were a lot of chapters to study and remember stuff from, and Hindi because, well, generally I just found the chapters just really boring. We had short stories and poems and I felt that some of those short stories had a good message to give, but they were so awfully written. I mean, it just dragged on. Plus it was in Hindi, something I don’t read every day so it takes more time than it does with English. So many of those stories were written more than 30-40 years back and maybe this was how people wrote back then. In the end, it all went really well. Now I have a couple of months of just basic chilling out before the results come out sometime in the last week of May, after which its back to college admissions and picking subjects and courses and what not.

Batmanvssuperman8191234If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that Batman v Superman – Dawn of Justice is releasing on the 25th of March, which is also my birthday. I know, right? I have been so hyped to see this ever since it was announced. Batfleck gonna be awesome. Now, yes the initial reactions of most of the people who watched it on its early premiere and stuff around the world, have all been negative. Everybody’s blaming Snyder for screwing up with what was supposed to be a monument of perfection. What people wanted to be a monument of perfection. It is understandable since so many have grown up reading the comics and watching on – screen versions of these characters and it is surely close to them. I haven’t seen the movie, so I don’t want to form any opinions right now, but it seems to me as if people need to appreciate it for what it is and not loathe it for what it is not. Its a huge thing that this movie got made in the first place. Seeing Batman and Superman in an epic showdown with such great graphics and stuff, thanks to modern technology. Who would’ve dreamed of seeing this on the big screen 10 years back? With such a great cast, no less. It is very easy to pick out faults in blockbusters like these and tout it around as a huge failure, but very few of us actually know what went on behind the scenes and why this happened. A friend of mine said it could be because of the owners and the people who bankrolled the movie, and could have maybe put some restrictions on the actual guys who made the film. Its not a completely outlandish idea. Despite all this though, I go in with an open mind and I am sure its going to be one of the best movies I ever saw on my birthday.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that I am going to go away for a little vacation next week, with my parents and my little sister. The place is a few hours away from the city, and its not all exotic and shit, like most people like to do when they turn 18 or just give their 12th Board Exams, but it doesn’t really matter to me. I’ll be gone for two weeks and its likely that I won’t get a decent internet connection there so its also very likely that I won’t be posting anything for those two weeks or so.

If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that a few weeks back I found out about this book fair in the city where they sell books by weight. Most of the books are second-hand but in close to perfect condition overall, and they have fixed prices like, Rs. 100/kg for certain kinds of books, 200/kg for others and 300/kg for the rest. That right there, is an absolute steal, because these days even some two hundred page books cost Rs. 399 and Rs. 499. So I got myself a few kilos. We kinda reached late when it was about to close plus we had to get home and study because our exams weren’t yet done with, or I would have probably taken more. In any case, I’m going there again. Anybody in Mumbai want to check this out, its near the Churchgate station, on the east side, in a place called Sundarbai Hall. Its open every day from 10 AM, I think, to 6 PM till the 4th of April.

Aaaaand, that’s all I’ve got for this Coffee Update, but there’s sure to be a looot more in the next one, because that will be after I get back from my vacation outta town, so stick around for that.

I hope you’re enjoying these Coffee Updates, because I sure am enjoying writing them! Let me know if you did by liking, following and above all, by letting me know in the comments down below. I’d love to hear what you have to say. Any of you going to watch Batman v Superman? What’d you think of the trailers and the initial reactions? Lemme know! 😀

I’ll see you guys next time.

Taking Inspiration from the Community

Today’s Blogging 101 assignment is to write a post based on the inspiration I got from one of the posts on others’ blogs on which I left a comment yesterday.

It is difficult to choose a particular post because I liked all of them very much. So, I’m going to choose two.

THE FIRST ONE

The first one is inspired by a post on The Epic Blog.

The post is a quote:

“Every villain is a hero in his own mind.”

– Tom Hiddleston

The post leaves you with this at the end:

“Loki is the best villain in the Marvel world. Period. Any disputes?”

loki

Absolutely not!

Confession coming up!

I am a HUGE movie and TV show buff. If I like a movie I will most certainly download it and rewatch it again and again until I know most of the lines by heart. If I like a TV show, I will, in most cases, watch EACH and EVERY episode there is to watch. That’s what happened with The Big Bang Theory, Suits, Friends and Arrow. Now its happening with The Flash.

And I love superheroes and movies and TV shows based on them. And I love Marvel AND DC. They’re both unique in their own ways but I’m going to have to take Marvel’s side here. And there is no doubt that so far, on screen, Loki is their best villain. I’m dying to see what (if anything) happens to him in Avengers: Age of Ultron (whether Thor realises he impersonates his father Odin at the end of Thor: The Dark World, or do they leave that for Thor 3?).

But, coming to the point, this post got me thinking about villains and superheroes and Marvel and then I saw my phone lying in front of me so I randomly started doing stuff on it and then I probably went to check for something to munch on in the refrigerator but all the while I was thinking about this post, at the back of my mind.

Now, I haven’t read a lot of Marvel comics (I was mostly restricted to Spider – Man as a kid and later a couple of Iron Man and Deadpool ones). Frankly, I am a comic book noob when it comes to Marvel or any comics really. But when I found out that the next X – Men movie is titled as X – Men: Apocalypse I was instantly excited because I’d heard of this Apocalypse character somewhere and I googled him and WOAH! he’s a hell of a villain too. He’s practically invincible and obviously the X – Men’s greatest enemy (foe, if you want to be dramatic and poetic).

So yes, a teensy little bit of a dispute here, but again, Loki is the best villain on screen so far, and X – Men is technically under another roof.

Moreover, I’ve always loved a little depth in characters (especially superhero characters), in terms of a little good in a bad character or vice versa. I’ve loved it when the portrayal of such a character trait is pulled off well, as it was for Loki (which was heavily dependent on the high amount of screen time over the large number of movies he appeared in).

So another character who I’ve noticed who has such a character trait is Bruce Banner AKA The Hulk. Granted he’s not had the best of times on screen but I think in The Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton) and of course the role in The Avengers (Mark Ruffalo) were pretty awesome.

In both (and even in the first Hulk movie, I think), Bruce Banner acknowledges and admits that he is not in control of ‘the other guy’, and the damage ‘he’ can cause is not something Banner wants. In The Incredible Hulk he actively tries to rid himself of the abomination he can become and in The Avengers there are a lot of moments where you can see Banner apprehensive about Fury, Romanoff and the whole idea of The Avengers Initiative.

This doesn’t make Banner a villain per se because he is after all an Avenger (though he was hunted like an animal (because he partly was) and was almost killed numerous times in the Hulk movies). What it does, though, is make Banner human, despite his turning into ‘a huge green rage monster’. But it is that little bit of villainy inside this extraordinary hero that makes him really appeal to me. You won’t find a lot of Hulk fanboys, Iron Man, yes, Captain America definitely, even Loki, but probably not Hulk. But you have one here.

THE SECOND ONE

The second one is inspired by a post on Pan – American Perros.

The post is based on an assignment in Photography 101 – What is Solitude?

That’s a profound question. But it can have a very simple answer. In fact, as pointed out in the post, Solitude can be Bliss. It definitely can and in most cases (at least for me) it is.

I’ve been called quiet ever since I can remember. I’ve been called an introvert too. But that’s never hurt me, or made me hate them. People have told me they don’t feel particularly good when people call them introverts. I, however, feel that being an introvert, or shy or quiet for that matter, aren’t things one can’t or shouldn’t be. I guess I’ve always known that and that’s probably why I never felt bad when I was called those things. I think that a lot of people don’t truly understand introverts and introversion and how it really works and at times that can hurt.

I wrote a blog post on introversion fairly recently. Click here to check it out.
